July 2025

Tuesday 1st - The heatwave continues. Not much else to say. Head to the beach to cool off and turn on the air-con...not all at the same time ;). We don't want the power to go off around the island.

Friday 4th - It's hot hot hot and where better to be than at one of Ithaca's great beaches. In the south, there are a few, but Filiatro, with it's music, snack bar and restaurant, lounges and happy vibes, is undoubtedly loved by those who like to be in a scene.

Monday 7th - A crew is going around the island putting up wire netting to stop any rockfall. Dangerous work! This worker is precariously traversing the cliff edge without a harness or safety net.

Above - The Raftopoulos family take some time out every evening in this little corner of Frikes, enjoying the views and calling daughter, Melina who is in Italy. Hi Melina!

Below - The friendly crew at Odysseas Restaurant in Frikes take a breath before the evening shift begins.

Above - Speedos have never left the runway in the Med. Below - Odysseas Restaurant in Frikes.

Above - Rithion Gift and Jewelry in Frikes.

Above and Below - Ageri Restaurant.

Above - 3 lovely cousins - Michelle, Zoe (Homer's View) and Nadia, enjoying good company at Dodonis in Frikes.

Wednesday 9th - We are still in the midst of a heatwave, but the forecast says that on Thursday, we will get some relief. It will be nice to have a cool breeze again. Meanwhile, the beaches are getting more crowded (except the ones you have to hike to) and as we get deeper into July, the more visitors set foot on our shores.

Above - The ferry from Lefkada is back on route, spending the night in Frikes. Timetable is posted at the pier.

Above - Looks like Zuckerberg and his supply boats can't stay away from Ithaca? Back for the second time in a week. A yacht for sleeping and entertaining, one for the water toys and one for transport ie helicopter. Below - LIttle Mark Z could have come to shore for an ice-cream at Dodonis, said hello to some of his FB admirers even.

Summer on Ithaca

Tuesday 1st

New archaeological discoveries on Ithaca—including inscribed tiles bearing the name of Odysseus—have confirmed the island’s Homeric identity. Recent research by the University of Ioannina has linked the site known as the “School of Homer” in northern Ithaca to an ancient worship center, the Odysseion. These findings, along with older artifacts, provide clear evidence that Odysseus was honored on the island for over six centuries, solidifying Ithaca’s place in the epic tradition. Further excavations are underway to deepen our understanding of this legacy.

Friday 4th - Summer in Greece is all about the water — it’s what draws people here year after year. But with each season, the number of yachts increases, and this summer there are more than ever. As they anchor closer to the shore, it naturally raises some concerns. While yachting brings its own kind of tourism, it can also have an impact on marine life — especially when treated wastewater is released into the sea — and on those who stay on land, supporting local businesses and the broader economy. For many, access to the clear, swimmable waters that define the Greek island experience is becoming more limited.

In many countries with significant yachting activity, simple guidelines help balance the needs of all — from protecting the environment to ensuring access for swimmers. Maybe it's time to start a gentle conversation about how something similar might work for Ithaca, too — in a way that keeps the island welcoming for everyone.

Monday 7th - Yes! There's a new place in Frikes town and by all accounts, it's absolutely worth trying. Word from those who have christened this corner of the village, is that the food is great and so are the prices! Very clever play on words too for the name of this snack bar/restaurant. Revithia are chickpeas (made in the Greek way of course) and of we all know what Ithaki means, so Revithaki...nice.

Wednesday 9th -
