What's New On Ithaca Greece
June 2021
Sunday 12th
Ithaca is finally experiencing amazing early summer weather. Warm, not hot, days and mild nights. Not alot of people around, especially on the weekends, but no one seems to mind the intimate feel of the place. It's very relaxed. Below - Kioni at night.
Above - Such a shame to see these grand old homes become ruins.
Above - The stunning views from Perahori, the village above Vathy in the south of Ithaca.
Above - Afales views from Ag. Sarantas. Below - Frikes.
Monday 14th - Sunset is really magical on Ithaca. Getting up early to see it is very special. It's all quiet, no one around, the water is very still, the cats and birds to keep you company. Below - Raxi view to the windmills.
Above - View to Kioni along the old road.
Above - 6.30am in Frikes.
Wednesday 16th - Below - Odysseas Restaurant will soon have a new addition. Owner Zisimos and family are expecting a little baby. Congratulations to them!!
Above - It's always a pleasure when someone comes up to me and takes the risk of asking if I am who I am. It's almost 20 years since I've been archiving ithaca, and it's great to know that so many love the website and photographs (millions and millions). It's a work of love. Not everything needs to be about profit, and seeing Ithaca is a special place for me and has been since I was introduced to the island back in 1983, my love for it has only grown. I'm so happy to take so many of you along with me through the days and years on Ithaca Greece.
Above - a view over to Kefalonia from just outside of Lefki. A very clear atmosphere yesterday after some early light rain. Below - Sunrise over the Ionian as seen from Frikes Bay.
Thursday 17th - Already past the half way mark of June and it's still comparatively quiet on the island. Locals are however, hopeful! Below - Ageri Restaurant has now also opened it's doors again for this summer season. The new kid on the block has definitely made a reputation for himself in his short time on the bay strip of Frikes.
Above - The board walk in Frikes was destroyed during the medicane last September, but here is a shiny new one to replace it.
Above - Odysseas Taverna always brightens up the Frikes strip with it's blue and white, and with some young blood at the helm, has heightened the Greek kitchen standard.
Above - Officially Dodonis, familiarly Pete's. Below - Exoghi.
Saturday 19th - Some fine, fine weather on Ithaca with a little wind picking up in the afternoon as is usual for June. Below - The corner shop in Ag. Sarantas is unfortunately no more, and hasn't been for some time. It's beginning to show the signs of neglect.
Above - View from the Stathis Raftopoulos memorial area to Afales Bay. Below - The northern center of Stavros. The village park looking conspicuously bare after the medicane uprooted many of it's trees.
Above - Kioni Bayside. Just perfect.
We may fear being stung, but thankfully we still have bees. We need them, the earth needs them.
Sunday 20th - The long weekend sees many Mainlanders landing on Ithaki's shores. Vathy is especially busy, but also Kioni and Frikes with wedding parties gathering. Below - Stavros fave couple Maria and Maki from Margarita Cafe with Andrea, our retired policeman.

Summer on Ithaca Greece
Sunday 12th
The island is still very lush in parts, but dry high grass, turning golden brown needs to be strimmed before we get into fire danger.
Monday 14th -
Above - Ag. Barbara, the small chapel above Stavros town in the north of Ithaca. From here you can get a great view over Stavros, but also across the north island to Platrithia and above to Exoghi, with Lefkada island in the distance.
Above - Wasps buzzing around a snake carcus. Haven't seen any live snakes, but I guess they're in the grass where they should be.
Wednesday 16th - The statues of Stathis Raftopoulos, proclaimed poet remain a viewpoint in Kolieri.
Above - A view through the trees and bush onto Afales Bay. Below - Ag. Barbara above Stavros.
Above - The walkway down to Cemetry Beach in Kioni.
Thursday 17th
Saturday 19th - The ripple effect of the UK extending it's lockdown, sees empty chairs on Ithaca.
Above - Stavros.
Above - The bell tower of Ag. Marina church in Exoghi, which is still waiting for repairs after the earthquake several years back.
Rain or shine, mountain or vale, the elderly locals scale the ups and downs of the island with complete ease, irregardless of their physical capabilities.
Above - Works continue to rebuild the road at Aetos. With buses expected at some time soon, this road needs to be ship shape.
Sunday 20th -
