In Vathy the roadside curbs have been whitewashed by the community. Everyone is getting ready for you all to enjoy your time on Ithaca, so come on over. We're ready for you! If you're missing the warm weather where you are, just look here. We're already in shorts and t-shirts and it's not even May yet.
April 2013 - Monday 22nd - No rain yesterday, despite the greyish skies on Saturday. Just explosions of colour through the wild flowers of Spring.
While I'm photographind the beautiful around the island, Platrithia and some other areas around the island are looking and smelling quite bad in places. Rubbish has been (by what means I don't know) collected from many areas, yet in some places the bins are overflowing and the cats are digging in and having a feast on the rubbish. Some locals complain they can smell the rubbish in their houses and from their balconies. Surely this is the worst time of the year to show this dishevelled side of the island.
I see alot of Greek pride online, how about some Ithaki pride too. There must be something we as a community can do, to keep our streets rubbish free. The rumours are that not everything the EU promises (in this particular case, wages for council workers), ends up where it's promised. Oh goodness, could that be true?
Tuesday 23rd - After a little rain and 4.5 rumble yesterday, today is actually quite warm. Definitely T-shirt weather, despite the dusty looking sky. It appears that this coming weekend, we'll be getting lots of visitors to the island. The charter flights will be landing in Argostoli on Kefalonia, and we're getting our share of the incoming visitors.
This time of year it's the nature lovers that head our way. Those who love to walk along Ithaki's tracks. Those who love to sketch and paint Ithaki's inspiring views.
Below Left - Looks like someone has cabin fever. The inscription into the bayside bench translates 'Ithaki = Alcatraz'.
Left - Even the back of my computer screen gets a view. On Ithaca you're really only a blink away from something inspiringly beautiful.
Wednesday 24th - What a beautiful day. With this kind of weather, I can imagine we'll have a hot summer this year. Off come the socks and on go the sandals and T-shirts. It's actually warm enough to swim.
Left - The pristine waters of Kefalonia strait around Ag. Ioannis Ithaki.
Getting around by moped and motorbikes is a great way to see the island, just watch out for the bus tours. With the Season always comes more traffic.
Above - The road from Anoghi via Kathara is strewn with fallen rocks left behind by scrambling goats. Be careful when you drive there, especially on a moped.
Left - Kioni - Shooting into the light has faded the colour somewhat, but this is still an idyllic village in the Ionian.
It's unfortunate for locals and visitors that the rubbish building up is still an issue. Word is there is not enough money to pay the rubbish collectors, but that's just cafe talk, there may be a GOOD?? reason??
Thursday 25th - Boy, April has just zoomed by. Soon we head into the BIG week of Easter (Orthodox Easter), the biggest celebration on the Greek Social calendar.
News has it that due to Ithaca's budget, in this case, non budget, that there just aren't the funds to do what needs doing, so some communities around the island have taken to financing petrol money for the rubbish trucks to collect their rubbish, others pay for fuel for the school bus and so on and so on. There is so much that needs attention, but for now, let's just get the rubbish off the streets so we can show our best side to the visitors coming to the island. Luckily, Ithaki's communities are proud enough to not niggle about the piggle we're in, and just get down to fixing it.
Saturday 27th - It's a very warm day. Swimming weather! people enjoying the outdoors.
Good news for those coming to Ithaca over Easter. The Ithaki Theatre company is doing one last performance of Three-Penny Opera on Easter Monday 6th April at the Cultural Center in Vathy. 9PM. The group has been doing such great work, so don't miss it. Get along, you'll really enjoy it!!
Sunday 28th - This weekend has been the Arts and Crafts Exhibition organized by Ester van Zuylen and by the children in the north of Ithaki who have been busy over winter producing these gems.

Another brilliant weather day. People are even heading off to the beaches. The skies are blue, the sun is warm and the waters, calm.
Monday 29th - Wow, nearly the end of April and heading into the BIG week of Easter. Forget Spring, Summer is here in full force. People are swimming and running around half dressed already.
Left - Moon rising up over the Ionian as seen from Anoghi.
Tuesday 30th - As we approach Greek Easter, more and more people are coming back to the island to celebrate this holiday with their Ithaki families. More and more visitors too. Yachts in the bay, walkers hiking the paths and artists contemplating their inspirations.
Wishing everyone on Ithaki a successful season and all those visiting our shores, a wonderful holiday. Let the Summer Season begin.
