September 2020

Thursday 24th

It's been a hell of a month inside a hell of a year for Ithaca. Covid, hurricane...what next. The usually calm Ionian churned out a storm to be reckoned with and now Frikes and Kioni especially, need to find a way through.

Due to the medicane, power outs and havoc, we couldn't get this to you in time, but Ithaki's paint the lyric art festival was a great success despite the odds.

Above - “Odder Sea” by Glenn Marshall - an award winning cartoonist from the UK

Below - From up above you'd never know what had just occured on our beautiful island of Ithaca.

More rain and lightning last night, but nothing too severe.

Sunday 27th - Kioni has restarted the village after the devastating medicane that hit last week. Even with almost 6 days without electricity, the community pulled together to get some semblance of normality back on the bay front.

Below - Frikes was so devastated by Ianos medicane, there was just too much damage for most of the businesses to restart. Odysseas Taverna and Rementzo Restaurant, took a direct incoming hit and both lost their bayside seating structures completely. Kladies also took a direct hit, losing it's seating area to sea and debris tossed with the wind. Ageri restaurant outdoor structure remained, but was filled with rocks, mud and debri, tossing chairs and furniture into the street. Dodonis, had cars and a boat tossed into the premises by the sea and wind, but has managed to salvage his business to stay open until the end of the official season. It's been a long clean-up, but the streets are passable again and hopefully 2021 will be kinder to Ithaki and the world in general.

Above - The Frikes business community waves you goodbye for this year, but hope to be back stronger in 2021. Don't forget, Dodonis remains open. Below - Platrithias, looking peaceful and untouched in the afternoon sunshine.

Above - Vathy harbour. Still yachts coming into the harbour despite last weeks medicane.

Tuesday 29th - Below - High up above, from above Perahori, the views of Vathy and beyond over the Ionian are spectacular.

Above - Exoghi views are also stunning. Afales bay so blue below.

Below - Looking down onto Lahos and Frikes from Exoghi. You can see the Nostos Hotel, a favourite accommodation, not only for the guests who choose to say there, but also for the general public of Northern Ithaki. The large pool is open for anyone to use for a small fee. Knowing the owners personally for decades, I can say for a certainty, this family run business is one of the best with reasonable prices and in house facilities.

Summer on Ithaca Greece

Thursday 24th

Paint the Lyric Art Festival on Ithaca has young and old submitting their works for display. What a great variety of ideas and imaginings.

“Penelope and Nobody” by Andriani Tzima of Greece - an undergraduate student at the School of Fine & Applied Arts of the University of Western Macedonia

“Journey in the night” by Aspasia Patrozou of Greece - also an undergraduate student at the School of Fine & Applied Arts of the University of Western Macedonia

Above - “The near beyond” by Harris Kontosfyris, an Associate Professor at the School of Fine & Applied Arts of the University of Western Macedonia.

Above - “The Covid Odyssey” by Henry Cook of the UK.

Above - “They gave me Greek” by Katerina Kalitsounaki, a Greek artist who studied and lives in Athens

Sunday 27th - It really does feel like the world has lost it's equilibrium this year. A horribly devastating year all 'round. Yes, we can take positives from almost anything, but the devastation that covid and Ianos medicane has left Ithaca is both a physical and an emotional challenge we as a community need to overcome. I think once we catch our breath over winter, with no more dystopian presents in our futures, covid19 and the measures, hopefully just a bitter memory, we will breathe easily again to enjoy life as we need it. Full of human touch and companionship, kissing and hugging, showing our faces to eachother again and not being afraid of a cough heard in the distance.

Tuesday 29th - Although the winds of Ianos have died down, the repercussions still echo around the island. The road to Exoghi continues to have earth slides due to trees falling from the weakened earth beneath them caused by the heavy rains and flooding. These are photos taken just a day or so ago by an Exoghi resident.

Above - Ag. Ioannis. Below - Taxiarchis church in Platrithia. We were very lucky that Ianos didn't send anyone to the chapel cemetary this year. Very lucky considering all the damages done around the island.
