It's no secret that the ferry situation with their untimely timetables and need to fit in Zakynthos has been detrimental to Ithaki's tourism. Many factions have written letters, sent convoys, made a little noise, but it won't be until Ithaki's factions are united as one BIG LOUD voice, screaming in the ears of the EU, that we will have any hope of the Ithaki - Patras route returning to this island. We should stop mucking around with the little guys here in Greece and head straight for the big boys in Brussels. We are afterall, under their wings, for good or bad, and they do aid with all sorts of schemes to help smaller communities. Oy!
August 2014 - Tuesday 5th - It's Panighiri time again tonight!!!!!! Sotiros in Stavros shall be bigger than Ben Hur or is that Ben Him? Throw off your shoes and your inhibitions and join the locals on the dance circle. It's alot of fun.
Wednesday 6th - Last night was the first night of Sortiros, the Stavros Panighiri (festival). The biggest of the summer festivals. It was great fun. We wouldn't expect any less. The weather held up just fine. Perfect for dancing the night away, which is just what happened. The dance circle didn't empty until around 5am.

Thursday 7th - Last night, the 2nd day of the Stavros Panighiri was an equal success with the first. It was a little cooler and a little windier, but that didn't seem to make any difference to those who attended.

There are many people who make Sortiros a success. The organizers of course, but also the many volunteers from around the village, who donate their time for the benefit of us all. A BIG thank you to them all.
Friday 8th - There's no pretending that the weather isn't giving us all a bit of grief. More wind than the Aegean it seems, and the skies, although we have lots of blue breaks, are increasingly cloudy.
Yesterday the power went out all over the island due to a fire in Kefalonia that damaged the line that feeds electricity to Ithaca. Luckily it didn't take too long to fix, but not before there was major concern for the restauranteurs and cafe bar owners.
It's also been reported that a luxury yacht exploded into flames on the 6th of August at around 7pm at Filiatro beach. There were no injuries, but the yacht could not be saved.

Don't forget the Anoghi Panighiri is next on the 14th of August, but before then, Kioni is having it's second Music Festival at the old school in Kioni.
Left - This gypsy has set up home on Frikes bayside over the past few months, repairing cane chairs and selling his wares.
Saturday 9th - I've got a feeling that summer will be late this year. Today, there's finally no wind and the skies haven't turned grey the close we get to the end of the day. Let's hope we have some of that fine, fine weather we are used to on this side of the world before August is over.
Left - Strange cloud over Anoghi.
Above - People that do this should be shamed. Yachters, visitors and locals, please respect our beautiful little island and get rid of your rubbish in the bins, not in our pristine (in this case not so pristine) waters.
Below - The dalmation of the bird world.
Left - These little creatures make enough noise to wake the dead. (a dried up cicada)
