Making our way through the Pirin mountains to the border near Xanthi, the scenery began to dry and change back into a northern Greece scape. The villages just south of the Bulgarian border on the Greek side, were heavily influenced by the muslim culture, with not a Greek orthodox church in sight. In Xanthi too, there's a strong muslim culture, which lives quite harmoniously with the Greek Orthodox culture. Xanthi is a vibrant city, young and busy with a beautiful old town and a buzzing university culture that had the streets alive day and night. A very clean city, one I will return to in the future, when I have a little more time to explore. One night and day wasn't enough.
We quickly passed through Thessalonika, again, a city I would like to visit in more detail, and then onto Meteora to spend a night after another long drive, before we finally made our way along the freeway back to the western coast of Greece, where Lefkada and the ferry awaited.
