September 2013 - Wednesday 18th - The forecast for a colder than usual European September seems to be coming true. September is usually alot warmer and more stable on Ithaca than it has been this year. There's still lots of sunshine, but some windy and stormy weather too. Last night high winds blew across the island, but today, all is calm, albeit a little cloudy now and then. There may be some more rain ahead.
Left - Moonrise over Agalaio, Kioni.
Above - David and Below - Richard from Hampshire UK. David and Richard have been spending their holidays on Ithaca for 16 years, especially in the village of Kioni. It's always great to catch up with people who look in on ithacagreece.com while they are away from Ithaca.
Left - A strange cloud amidst a mostly blue sky just before dusk yesterday.
Friday 20th - A mostly fine day again yesterday, and although the nights are definitely cooler, there is still a big chance of warm days at the beach.
Left - Frikes in September, is still a busy little port village, livened up by Day Trippers and yachts sailing in.
Left - Some of the Rementzo gang, waiting for the night to begin.
Left - There was a full moon rising last night.
Left - Sunset colours fall across the mountain village of Exoghi.
Above - View of the full moon rising from Dodonis Cafe and Frikes Suites, in Frikes of course.
Above Left - The distant lights of Taxiarchis in Platrithia.
Left - The nightlights of Exoghi as seen from Stavros in the north of Ithaca.
Saturday 21st - Some very clear views these past few days. There's nothing like a little wind and rain to clear up the atmosphere. If you're lucky enough to be on Ithaca island right now, you're able to see the views, usually obscurred by the heat mist over high summer.
Busloads of people still coming onto the island, looking around at the sites, having a little lunch... It's actually a great time to be here. Not too crowded, but enough activity to still be interesting.
Above - Clouds and blue sky.
Left & Above - Walking around Raxi, at the top of Kioni, you'll get some spectacular views. It's also great to see that people are restoring their houses in a traditional manner which really makes Ithaca very special.
Left - Kioni Bay is the idyllic spot for your Greek holiday. Friendly community, beautiful views and crystal clear waters.
Above - Kohili Restaurant in Vathy has long been a favourite with the locals, now it's time for the visitors to Ithaca to discover what's so special about this bayside restaurant. Kohili joins ithacagreece.com. Click Here
Left - Paul and Helen Karavias have been coming to Ithaca for quite a few years, staying in Vathy, where Paul has his family roots. Paul is involved with the Ithacan Philanthropic Society in Melbourne Australia.
Sunday 22nd - Stop at any bend on the road on your way down to Ag. Ioannis, and turn in any direction for some great scenes and views. Yesterday, even Fiscardo on Kefalonia, was clear and in view. Along the Kefalonia Strait. On a clear day, you can see from beyond Sami all the way to the north of our big sister island.
Monday 23rd - Another storm passed over Ithaki last night. The thunder and lightning seemed to skim around the island's edges, but quite a bit of rain poured down.
Left - Farouk's general store is more than a tradition in Stavros, but a real experience. You'll be surprised what's hidden behind and under and on top. From toiletries to hair products, clothing to haberdashery, crockery, footwear, you name it, Farouks probably have it.
Tuesday 24th - Already into the last week of September. You'd think everything would be winding down, but there's still quite a bit of activity around the place, certainly, not morning to night, but at special times of the day, you'd think it was mid August.
Left - A good sized cruiser brought quite a few people to the island yesterday morning. They didn't stay very long, but long enough to make Vathy look i had a busy morning.
The economic crisis has effected Greece in many way, one of which is sitting around the Kafenion. Although locals are still doing, despite the hardships, the village squares certainly aren't as busy as they used to be.
Below Left - Klara Koitler, one of Ithaki's talented artists having a morning coffee with Judy, Ionian holidays rep. You can see Klara's paintings exhibited in the Pop-Up shop in Vathy. I believe, you can also purchase from there.
Left - Fish were jumping. At least that's what it appeared like in Vathy yesterday. Little fishes (and some bigger ones) all along the edge of the bay.
Left - What else is there to do on a lazy September afternoon, but have a little nap. Ahhh.
Wednesday 25th - More blue skies than not this week, but still there have been patches where it looked like more rain was imminent, but nothing eventuated. This is Autumn, so it's pretty much expected to have the skies change more regularly. Those long, hot summer days, where the horizon is misted out, are mostly over. The weather is great though for so many more things now, than just lazing at the beach.
Left - The Kioni windmills are a famous Ithaki site. There is a path that leads from cemetary beach to the windmills, if you're on the island, and wish to have a nice little walk.
So many yachts still sailing around our shores and in the Ionian generally. I believe the organized yachting season ends late October.
Don't forget that in a few days, there's the Marida Festival at Polis. 1st of October to be exact. It's always a really great time. This festival has such a nice atmosphere. That it's held late morning, is also a benefit. We get to be out in some glorious weather (hopefully).
Thursday 26th - There are some signs of Autumn in our greening landscape now that we're heading into the end of September. Ithaca is mostly a green island and the closer we get to winter, the greener it becomes, but occasionally we do see some Autumn colours in the trees or the brush, albeit, not very often and not very much.
A little overcast today, but the temps are still quite mild. For now there's nothing major on our weather horizon, but next week, storms are forecast, bringing with them some more rain.
Below - Remembering those who have passed away. Nikos Vlassopoulos from Lahos.
