May 2013 - Wednesday 15th - It's been a windy few days, but with the wind also comes a clearer atmosphere, aqua seas and a freshness we'd lost through some early heat.
It's the time of the year when nearly everything revolves around the water.
Bus tours are back in swing on the island, bringing with them visitors on a day trip from all over the world.
It's also that time of the year when the bayside restaurants are a great place to hang out for lunch.
Thursday 16th - Can't believe we're already half way through May. With barely a drop of rain this past month, Ithaca is beginning to dry out a little. All the lush grasses and flowers are disappearing and only the tough thistles and weeds survive.
It's the time of year when everyone is strimming the dry grass from their properties before the big heat of summer arrives, before the fire danger period.
The yachting companies seem to be doing very well for again this year, bringing lots of yachting flotillas into the baysides around Ithaca.
Left - Jimmy from Kiki's supermarket has the quote of the day "The measure of a man is the length of his beard".
Lots of new faces around again at certain times of the day. When the buses or Day Tripping ferries come, the island looks alive for a couple of hours. Once they leave, there's a very, very quiet lull until the evening set come out for dinner along the baysides.
As for quite a few years now, many have it tough, not just in Greece, but elsewhere. You can see how little people are spending when they go out. Many will choose to buy some supplies from the supermarket and eat in at their accommodations, treating themselves to maybe one or two dinners out. In Frikes, the supermarkets have also taken on a little social scene of their own, with some people buying a beer over the counter and then drinking at the door. Ah I love the smell of crisis in the air.
While it seems to suit the world media that Greece is out of the economic crisis, the truth is in the streets. Greeks have and continue to have the wind knocked out them under the austerity measures. Summer time on Ithaca, gives them a little breathing space, hoping for a good season to keep them going through another winter.
Left - At Avra Taverna in Kioni, a couple of well-liked locals enjoy an afternoon ouzo.
The weather forecast has rain on our menu for tomorrow. Hopefully it will pass over quickly. Today is quite grey and cloudy and it looks like the rain may not hold off until its forecast arrival of tomorrow.
Saturday 18th - Another dusty and sandy day yesterday with more weather coming up from Africa, dumping muddy rain over us all. A rather brown atmosphere for what should be a bright blue May day.
Last night the lower Vathy High School put on their rendition of 'Little Prince' at the Cultural Center in Vathy. It was a full house as family and friends came along to support the young theater group.
