Epiphany, or Theophany (Θεοφάνεια), is a major religious celebration in Greece, observed on January 6th. It marks the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River and the manifestation of the Holy Trinity. The day is celebrated with the Blessing of the Waters ceremony, where priests throw a cross into the sea, rivers, or lakes, and swimmers dive to retrieve it. This act symbolizes the sanctification of the waters and the renewal of life.
Festivities include processions, church services, and community gatherings. In many coastal towns, fishermen's boats are blessed for good fortune. Epiphany holds deep cultural and spiritual significance, reflecting Greece's close ties to the sea and Orthodox Christian traditions.
We headed to Vathy and then Frikes. No one went into chilly Frikes Bay but several did dive into Vathy bay.
